Abstract: This seminar will explore the impact the US strong push for TPP has had on political, economic and strategic trends in the Asia-Pacific region. It will consider the following five key variables: a system for changing functional norms in APEC; a mechanism to encircle China's rise; a political tool for strengthening the US-Japan bilateral relations; a process of potentially enhancing Japan's regional economic influence; and a contribution to clarifying the division of labor in expanding regional architectures such as APT and EAS. The seminar will aim to compensate for a relatively biased debate on TPP in Japan which tends to evolve around the calculation of costs and benefits for the domestic economy through the broader analytical focus on TPP's international implications.

This event is free and open to the public.
